Hi. I am trying to redirect urls outside the Joomla database as described here:

To redirect all the URLs included those one who would not be managed by Joomla! simply activate .htaccess standard Joomla! file, and add the following row to its:
ErrorDocument 404 /

However, I have renamed my .htaccess file to htacess.txt in order to use Joomla SEF.

Can you explain to me exactly how to add a row to this file and whether or not this will work for me? I am reluctant to modify my htaccess file because I'm a beginner when it comes to programming.

Hi Stephanie,
if you have an Apache web server, you can rename htaccess.txt to .htaccess and still use the Joomla SEF. Then, you can add the ErrorDocument at the end to redirect all errors 404 to Joomla.

I understand that can do this. I have already renamed htaccess and am using Joomla SEF.

What I need to know is HOW do I "add the ErrorDocument at the end?" What code to I need to add and where do I put this in the htaccess file?

I'm sorry to seem dense; I am not a programmer so I need to know exactly how this works. I don't want to mess up something in the htaccess file.

if you haven't modified the standard Joomla .htaccess file is very simple. Just open the file with a text editor, go to the end, and add this as last line:



That's all. To check if this works, try to call a non-existing URL. You can also send me the file and I will modofy it for you (use info(at)sistemistica.it).
