Let me just start by saying I'm pretty new so please don't laugh
Ok I'm trying to setup 404 redirect for any time a page cannot be displayed in my site bad link or misspellings.

1. I added ErrorDocument 404 / to the very end of .htaccess file

2. I went to plugin and set to enabled yes, set custom error 404 page to yes, and error 404 page ID to 21, this is the cat ID for the article I made for the 404 page

3. Next I went to the components REDJ and created a new item, I set the from url to ^/houstons$ (this page dosn't exist) and set to url http://{siteurl}houston.html

4. in Pages 404 I just left the English that was installed with ReDJ

When I type the url in browser /houstons.html I get a 404 - component not found but not the page I made to replace this
Again I'm really new and this is my first attempt to work this ReDJ on my Joomla.
Not sure what I should do to get any 404 error to display my custom page i created.
any help would be appreciated. Thanks

there must be a little misunderstanding. Let us be absolutely clear...

ReDJ have 2 main functions:

1) Redirect some URL to new one (e.g. if you want to create URL aliases, or you have OLD non-existing URL and want to redirect to new pages)

2) Present to user a custom error page, different from Joomla ones

So, your points...

1) OK
2) Error page ID is not the article ID. You must refer to error page ID in ReDJ component. There are two demo pages (Italian & English) that improve the standard Joomla error page adding email. In the next release it will be possible to add an article...
3) This item is needed to redirect URL matching ^/houstons$ to some different page. Don't mess with custom error page
4) Ok, no problem. You can have as error pages as you want...
